In October 2018, worthless studios piloted the concept on New York City’s Canal street as part of Wallplay Network’s #OnCanal project. FREE FILM : CANAL was an absolute success, reaching thousands of passersby who were all itching for the project to run again. In a matter of nine weeks, a rundown store front was converted to a fully operational darkroom and uniquely designed exhibition space acting as a community hub for old and young local photographers alike to express themselves on the prompt phrase ‘canal.’
IMMEDIATE AUDIENCE RESPONSE
We distributed 100 rolls with limited prior marketing in under 10 hours. The project’s concept and space were inviting to all.
ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH PARTICIPANTS
85 participants returned their rolls after engaging with the prompt and hitting drop-off deadlines. We created real relationships and trust with our participants right away.
RECOGNIZABLE AND REPRESENTATIVE JURY
We put together a jury with members ranging in age, sex, race, and religion to make sure all view points were represented equally.
PROJECT EXTENDED TWICE
Our host extended our project from 24 days to 64 days. The feedback and demand to visit the space was high.
